How Do Competition Odds Work?
Short answer: If one prize is drawn from 10,000 valid entries, one entry has a one-in-10,000 chance. Buying more entries increases your chance, but it does not make winning likely or guaranteed.
A simple example
With one prize and 10,000 entries, five valid entries give a five-in-10,000 chance, equivalent to one in 2,000. This assumes every entry has an equal chance and all available entries are sold or accepted.
What changes the odds?
- The number of valid entries in the draw
- The number of prizes or separate winning positions
- Whether the advertised ticket allocation sells out
- Whether instant-win prizes are allocated separately
Odds are not value
A smaller draw may offer better odds but a lower-value prize or higher entry price. Treat every entry as entertainment spending, not an investment, and set a budget before entering.
